Born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Studied at the Rotterdamse Grafische School (School for printing and graphic arts). In 1986 he attended a workshop in France with Claude Mediavilla. He considers this as his start on the path of calligraphy. He finished his studies in Graphic/Typographic Design at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague (passed with distinction). Taught workshops in different countries in Europe, Australia, Mexico, South Korea and USA, and at The Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague (post-graduate course students type design). Elmo worked as a freelance graphic designer/type designer (for DTL the Dutch Type Library, for which he designed typeface Dorian, but worked on other typefaces too). His calligraphy has been exhibited in Belgium, France and the Netherlands. His work has also been selected to appear in different publications. Since 2016 he has divided his time between working for a design studio which specializes in designing and producing corporate and annual reports and the other half he spends creating letters and teaching workshops as often as he can.
